Building flows

The flow editor

Canvas, block list, settings panel, the sentence and keyboard shortcuts.

Open it in the app

The editor has the block list on the left, the canvas in the middle, a block's settings on the right when one is selected, and Ask xMap at the bottom.

  • Add a block: drag it from the list, click it to add it after the selected block, or press + on a selected block for the four blocks that usually come next.
  • Link two blocks by dragging from the dot on the right of one to the next. Select a link and press its + to put a block between the two.
  • The sentence above the canvas says what the flow does. Click a part to open its block; some parts (the schedule, the cities, the type of place, the email address) can be changed right there.
  • Move around by dragging the background, zoom with the buttons or the wheel. On a phone, pinch and drag.
  • History shows earlier versions of the flow; any can be restored.
  • Comments are for the team: type @ to mention someone.
  • Draw: the brush, first in the bar at the bottom right, opens the drawing tools (notes, text, shapes, arrows, pen, marker, sections, stamps, eraser). Click a drawing to change its colour, fill, thickness and more. A section carries the blocks inside it when moved, an arrow dropped on a block follows it, and Label this flow titles each stage for you. Drawings never run and cost nothing.
  • Live estimates: a block that finds or filters things says, a second after you change its settings, about how many it would pass on, for example about 120 coffee shops on Nearby places or about 45 left on a Filter. They are worked out on sample data in your browser, so nothing is searched and no credits are used; a run shows the real numbers in their place until your next change. On a phone they show in the list of steps.

Watch a block's film without leaving the editor. A block that has a short film (about a minute) says Watch how it works under its description in its settings, and shows a play button when you point at it in the block list. The film plays in a small window over the editor, with its narration and captions; close it and you are back where you were. App blocks and app events play the film of all app blocks, drawn with that app.
