Seeds and crops
The challenge. Kavya is an agronomist at a large seed company near Chennai. Thousands of rice farmers buy her seed. When a farmer sows the day before a downpour, the seed washes out, and he blames the seed. Next time he buys from someone else. Kavya’s field officers cannot call every farmer before every storm. Last season, one farm in eight had to sow twice.
The flow. With xMap Flows, Kavya built Willow. When a farmer’s seed order lands in the sheet, Willow checks the next seven days at that farm, and if heavy rain is coming, tells the farmer to hold the seed a few days, or, if the week looks dry, tells him it is a good week to sow.
The result. In October, as the monsoon arrives, Willow tells two thousand farmers around Tiruvallur to wait four days. The rain comes and goes, and they sow on settled ground. Farms sowing twice fall from one in eight to one in fifty. Kavya’s seed didn’t change. It just started arriving with the forecast.

Crop advisory
The challenge. Vikram is an independent crop adviser outside Hyderabad. Sixty farms pay him to keep their cotton and rice healthy. He can visit maybe six farms a day, so each farm sees him once every two weeks. By the time he spots a field turning yellow from pests or thirst, the damage is done. He spends more time on the road than in the fields.
The flow. With xMap Flows, Vikram built Orbit. Every Monday morning, Orbit takes his sixty farms, finds the latest clear satellite picture of each field, adds the rain expected in the week ahead, and puts every field on one map, picture by picture.
The result. On Monday, Vikram opens one map and clicks through sixty fields in twenty minutes. Three near Chevella look paler than their neighbours. He drives straight there, finds stem borer early, and saves the crop. Vikram still walks the fields. He just knows which ones need him.

Dairy cooperative
The challenge. Lena runs the morning milk round for a large dairy cooperative north of Munich. Every morning, eighteen tankers collect milk from three hundred farms. When a road is closed, the driver finds out at the barrier, in the dark. He turns back, the round runs late, and Lena spends her morning on the phone, redrawing routes.
The flow. With xMap Flows, Lena built Pathfinder. Every morning at three, Pathfinder takes the farms on today’s round, checks every closure and roadworks near each one, plans each tanker’s round, and sends each driver the route, with the closures marked.
The result. At three, Pathfinder spots a closed bridge near Freising and roadworks outside Erding. The drivers have their routes before they start the engine. Not one tanker turns back, and every farm is collected on time. The roads still close. Lena’s tankers just stopped finding out the hard way.
