Dentists in Toronto, London and Sydney compared: counts, chains, ratings and openings
Toronto lists the most dentists of the three, London the fewest, and ratings and recent openings differ too. The figures side by side, and what they can and cannot tell you.
Within 10 km of their centres, xMap's places database lists 830 dentists in Toronto, 768 in Sydney and 638 in London (November 2026). Among the practices nearest each centre, more than nine in ten are independent in all three cities. Where they differ most is in how practices are rated and in how many opened in the past year: of the roughly 460 nearest each centre, 42 opened in the last twelve months in Toronto, 7 in London and 5 in Sydney.
This is a data piece for people who sell to dental practices, plan clinics or study healthcare markets. It sets the three market pages side by side, works out a few ratios from them, and then spends as much time on what the figures cannot tell you as on what they can.

Ratios worth working out
- Chain share. Of the practices nearest each centre, 13 of 460 in Toronto is under 3%; 33 of 462 in London is about 7%; 18 of 465 in Sydney is about 4%. London has the most group-owned practices, led by Bupa with 15 branches among them; in Sydney, Bupa Dental leads with 7; in Toronto the largest group, Toothworks, has 5.
- Rating coverage. About 80% of Toronto's nearest practices carry a rating, against about 71% in London and 72% in Sydney.
- The top group. Of the rated practices, about 86% are at 4.5 or more in Toronto, 79% in London and 88% in Sydney.
- Recent openings. 42 of 457 dated practices in Toronto is about 9%; London's 7 of 460 and Sydney's 5 of 462 are each under 2%.
- Density. A 10 km circle covers about 314 square kilometres, so Toronto works out at roughly 2.6 dentists per square kilometre, Sydney 2.4 and London 2.0. That is a crude figure, for reasons below.
What an analyst can reasonably say
- Dentistry in all three city centres is an owner-run trade. A supplier needs a field approach to hundreds of independent practices; a handful of group contracts will not cover the market.
- London's central practices are rated a little lower on average and have a smaller top group. For a group trying to win patients on service, the bar to stand out is lower there than in Toronto or Sydney.
- Toronto's listing shows far more recent openings near the centre. That is a lead worth following, for example by a supplier of fit-out or equipment, not yet a proven fact about growth.
- London lists fewer dentists inside the circle than the other two. Before reading that as a gap, check how the circle sits on each city and how practices are classified; a gap needs a map and population behind it, not one total.
What the figures do not show
Good analysis says where the evidence stops. Here, it stops in several places.
- Demand. A count is supply. Whether 830 practices are too many or too few depends on how many people live and work nearby, and on how dentistry is paid for in each country. Population figures are available for Canada and Australia in xMap, but not for the United Kingdom, so a like-for-like people-per-dentist ratio is not possible for London from this data.
- Size of practice. A single-chair surgery and a twelve-chair clinic each count as one place.
- The centre, not the whole circle. Chains, ratings and openings describe the 460 to 465 practices nearest each centre, about half of Toronto's listing and nearly three quarters of London's. Practices further out may be rated differently or include more chains, so compare like with like and do not apply these shares to the whole count.
- The openings gap. Opening dates come with the listing. A cluster of recent dates can mean real openings, or that many existing practices were first listed or re-listed in the year. Sample twenty of Toronto's 42 and check before you build a story on them.
- Where the gaps are. Because the figures are worked out from the practices nearest the centre, these pages do not say which parts of each city have the fewest dentists. To find that, search each district as its own area and check every gap on a map, since water and parkland look like gaps too.
Repeating the comparison for your own cities
The market pages cover a fixed circle and a fixed set of cities. For your own territory, or another city, an AI employee can produce the same figures each month:
- Schedule: the first Monday of each month.
- Area of interest: the cities or districts you compare, each as its own area.
- Nearby places: Dentist, up to the 500 nearest per search, with each place's chain flag, rating and opening date.
- Calculated field or xMap LLM on the whole list to total chains, ratings and recent openings per area.
- Make a report as a PDF for the team.
To act on the result rather than study it, the template Independent dental clinics to call, every weekday sends a daily call list of owner-run practices, and New clinics for my medical reps, by specialty sends newly found clinics with Only new so nobody is called twice.
Questions
How many dentists are there in Toronto, London and Sydney?
xMap's places database lists 830 within 10 km of the centre of Toronto, 768 in Sydney and 638 in London, as of November 2026. These are listed practices inside that circle, not the whole metropolitan area.
Are most dentists in these cities part of a chain?
No. Of the practices nearest each centre, independents make up about 97% in Toronto, 93% in London and 96% in Sydney.
Why are dentists rated so highly?
Patients who review a dentist tend to be loyal and pleased, so averages sit around 4.5 to 4.7. Compare a practice with that local norm, not with businesses in other trades.
Does Toronto really have more new dental practices?
Of the practices nearest each centre, its listing shows 42 opened in the last year against 7 in London and 5 in Sydney. Check a sample before relying on it, since a recent date can also mean a newly listed older practice.
