POI data (points of interest)

Records of places such as shops, clinics and offices, with their category, position and details.

A point of interest (POI) is a place someone might want to find or visit: a restaurant, a pharmacy, a fuel station, a school, an office. POI data is a dataset of such places, each with a name, a category, a position (latitude and longitude) and details such as address, phone, website, opening hours, rating, brand and opening date.

What makes POI data useful

  • Coverage: how many of the real places it contains.
  • Categories: a clean, detailed taxonomy, so "specialty coffee shop" and "petrol station" mean the same thing everywhere.
  • Freshness: how quickly new openings and closures show up.
  • Attributes: chain or independent, rating, opening date, contact details.
