Weekend traffic vs weekday traffic: how the roads around a site change
The roads near offices empty at weekends while those near malls, parks and the coast fill up. How to compare weekend and weekday traffic around your sites and act on it.
Weekend traffic differs from weekday traffic in timing and in place. On weekdays most roads share a morning and an evening peak set by work and school. At weekends the early peak mostly disappears, traffic builds later in the morning, and it gathers around shopping, leisure and family destinations instead of offices. So the same site can be easy to reach on Tuesday and hard on Saturday, or the reverse. Measure both, at the same hours, before you set opening times, delivery slots or a site's value.
This is for retailers and restaurant groups setting weekend hours, delivery and service teams planning weekend rounds, event organisers, and property teams comparing sites. It explains what changes at the weekend, what you can measure in which countries, a made-up example, the mistakes, and an AI employee that keeps the comparison up to date.
What changes at the weekend
- The morning peak shrinks. Fewer people commute, so roads near business districts are often clear at 08:00 on a Saturday.
- A late-morning and afternoon peak appears on roads to malls, retail parks, markets, sports grounds, parks and the coast.
- Evenings shift. Friday and Saturday evenings can be busy around restaurants and nightlife, later than the weekday rush.
- Roadworks move. Some cities schedule closures at weekends to spare commuters, so a road that is clear all week may be closed on Sunday.
- The weekend itself varies. In most countries it is Saturday and Sunday; in some it falls on other days. Use the local weekend.
What you can measure, and where
Traffic Flow works wherever it has roads measured. It reads the traffic around each place at the moment the flow runs: current speed, free-flow speed, the jam factor from 0 to 10, congestion as a percentage, the level in words and the busiest road. It does not count cars and keeps no history, so to compare weekends and weekdays you run it at the same hours on both and keep the readings.
In the United Arab Emirates you can go further. The Road traffic history dataset in Regional data counts the cars on the road nearest each place, hour by hour since January 2021, with their speed. Its Days setting picks every day, weekdays only or weekends only (Saturday and Sunday), and it can give totals or one row a day or an hour. Two runs, one for weekdays and one for weekends, give cars a day, the busiest hour and the average speed for each, side by side.
How to compare the two
- Pick three hours that matter to you, for example 08:00, 12:00 and 17:00, in the site's time zone.
- Schedule Traffic Flow at those hours on every day of the week for at least three weeks.
- Group the readings into weekdays and weekend days, then average speed against free flow and congestion for each hour.
- Note the hours where the two differ most. That is where your weekend plan should differ too.
- In the UAE, read Road traffic history for the last 90 days twice, weekdays only and weekends only, and compare cars a day and the busiest hour.
A made-up example in Dubai
Invented figures for illustration. A furniture retailer has a showroom on a road leading to a large mall and a warehouse in a business district. It reads the last 90 days of Road traffic history for both, weekdays and weekends separately.
| Showroom road, weekdays | Showroom road, weekends | Warehouse road, weekdays | Warehouse road, weekends | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cars a day | 38,000 | 52,000 | 61,000 | 24,000 |
| Busiest hour | 18:00 | 16:00 | 08:00 | 13:00 |
| Average speed | 48 km/h | 31 km/h | 39 km/h | 66 km/h |
Invented figures for illustration; not real counts for Dubai.
The showroom road is busier and slower at weekends, with its peak in the afternoon; the warehouse road is the opposite. The retailer moves weekend deliveries to leave the warehouse in the morning, when its road is clear, and avoids arriving at customers near the mall after 14:00. It also opens the showroom an hour later on weekends and closes an hour later, to match its afternoon peak.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using the weekday picture for everything. A site judged on weekday mornings may look very different on a Saturday afternoon.
- Too few weekends. Two or three weekends can be skewed by a holiday, a match or a festival. Read several, or 90 days in the UAE.
- The wrong weekend. Use the local weekend days. The Road traffic history's weekends are Saturday and Sunday.
- Calling a clear road a quiet one. Outside the UAE you see speed, not volume.
- Ignoring weekend closures. Add Traffic incidents to your Friday check so weekend roadworks do not surprise you.
Keep it up to date with an AI employee
- Schedule: Several times a day, every day, at your three hours.
- My data with your sites.
- Traffic Flow: Within 500 m.
- A Google Sheets step that saves each reading: site, traffic_updated (the date and time measured), speed_kmh, free_flow_kmh, congestion_pct and traffic_level. A column in the sheet turns the date into weekday or weekend.
In the UAE, add a monthly flow: Schedule on the first of the month, My data with your sites, two Regional data blocks with Road traffic history (last 90 days, weekdays only and weekends only, Totals for each place), and an Email with both sets side by side. What lands each month is every site's weekday and weekend cars a day, busiest hour and speed. The templates road speeds outside my depots, every hour and weekly road disruption report are close starting points.
Questions
Are roads always quieter at weekends?
No. Roads near offices usually are, but those leading to malls, retail parks, beaches and sports grounds are often busier at weekends than on weekdays.
Can I compare weekend and weekday car counts anywhere?
Only on roads in the United Arab Emirates, through Road traffic history in Regional data, which can split weekdays and weekends. Elsewhere you compare live speeds and congestion.
How many weekends should I measure?
At least three, and more if a holiday or a big event falls in that time, since one unusual weekend can skew a short comparison.
Which days count as the weekend in Road traffic history?
Saturday and Sunday, the weekend in the United Arab Emirates.
